Is Yuddhishter - Dharamraja an able leader?
In my opinion, every ancient or historical incident, custom, sampradaya should not be judged with today's mind set. we should not come to hasty conclusions as every major or minor custom of the past era has been depending on sociopolitical circumstances and dharmic code prevailing over in those times that influenced the nature & behaviour of ordinary persons & royals.
Any how, after analysing the dharma raju's role in mahabharat, my comments are as follows:
1.as a leader, its not sufficient to be well versed with the dharma but its also very crucial to have the attitude of how to execute and when to implement the dharma karma. why was Yudhishthira reluctant to punish the wrong doers and had to be goaded by Draupadi, Bhima and Kunti to pick up arms against Kauravas? Leaders must have both Satwic and Rajasic gunas in their style and so,they must perform enlightened actions. Yudhishthira was definitely enlightened but he lacked rajas – action orientation. Dharmaraj was indifferent to the consequences of his actions and displayed an unwillingness to take up arms to redress adharma.
2.a leader should never be callous.
3.a leader should look after the followers, dependents, especially women folk.- Yudhishthira lost everything in dice game and in the end he put his brothers and his beloved Draupadi at stake and lost them too.
4. a leader shall not have any type of weakness. Yudhishthira succumbed to the bait offered by Duryodhana to play a game of dice.
5. A Leader should learn lesson quickly & never commit mistake second time . draupadi won back the freedom and kingdom for her five husbands. Yudhishthira however succumbed to the second challenge to play, and he lost everything yet again. The five Pandavas were exiled for thirteen years, in which the last year, they would have to spend incognito.
6. any human being ,put aside as leader, never have any right over the brothers .
we couldn't assimilate the Yudhishthira’s notion of dharma when he put his brothers and wife at stake. Lastly even if the rule book allowed this – dharma is clear that women will not be dishonored in any circumstance (offering your wife as a wager is a dishonor).

But dharma raju may defend as follows.

But dharma raju may defend as follows.
- As a king , when called by another king for Sportive play ( suhruth Jyoodam), one can not say NO.This is RAAJA DHARMA.
- in those days, wife was treated as a Property ..
- unflinching adherence to Satya(truth) and Dharma (righteousness to fulfill one's moral duty), which were more precious to him than royal ambitions, material pursuits and family relations.
- Yudhisthira rescued Bhima from Nahusha. He also rescued his four brothers from Yaksha by exemplifying not only his immense knowledge of Dharma, but also understanding its finer implications.
- he denounced casteism, saying a Brahmin is known by his actions and not his birth or education, thus portraying a changeable Dharma that modifies itself to suit the times.
- Yudhisthira reproached himself for weakness of mind, but at the time he argued that it was impossible to refuse a challenge of any nature, as he was a Kshatriya and obliged to stand by the Kshatriya code of honour.
- During the thirteen years, his adherence to religious values in face of adversity was repeatedly tested.
